How Many Days Until Winter?

When the first snow of the season typically falls

Eager for the first snow fall after the long, hot summer? We are too. That’s why we researched the National Weather Service’s National Snow Analyses database to find out when the first measurable snowfall (defined as 0.1 inch or more) can be expected for each state. Find your state in the map below.

2016-2017 Winter Outlook

According to the Farmers’ Almanac winter forecast, exceptionally cold weather will predominate over parts of the Northern Plains, Great Lakes, Midwest, Ohio Valley, the Middle Atlantic, Northeast, and New England this winter. Want even better news? They are also predicting above-normal amounts of precipitation AKA snow.

The National Weather Service and other meteorological weather forecasters have also predicted above average snowfall and freezing temperatures this year due to the end of El Nino and the beginning of La Nina. What is La Nina? In a nutshell, La Nina forces focus on the northern jet streams while weakening those in the south which keeps moisture in the northern part of the country. High moisture coupled with freezing temperatures often means more snow. Learn more about La Nina here.
