Understanding The Problems With Snowbikes

Most dirt bikes do NOT have a thermostat in their coolant system. Why? Dirt bikes are designed to be used in a hot environment where you need maximum cooling without restriction. When being used as a snowbike, the coolant system overpowers the BTU output which results in a cold engine. The stock ECU monitors the engine coolant temperature and bases many aspects of the engine calibrations on it.  If the stock ECU reads the engine is cold, it will limit power. When the engine is cold, the aluminum piston can expand faster than the steel cylinder wall.  If a cold engine is run at maximum potential the piston could expand faster than the cylinder wall and create a four-point seizure. 

The next problem is when the fuel and intake track are very cold the atomization of the fuel is not efficient.  Fuel droplets end up pooling in the intake track or on top of the piston. This reduces the efficiency of the combustion chamber.  Not only does the engine coolant temperature need to maintain its target, but so does the engine oil.  On all gasoline engines a small amount of fuel gets past the piston rings and ends up in the engine oil. This is especially common on a stock snow bike ran for long periods of time with a cold coolant/oil temp.  When the engine oil temperature is at operating temperature the oil flashes off any fuel that ends up in the oil.  If the oil is not at operating temperature, the crankcase will slowly fill with fuel and over long runs like in the cold mountains the engine will hydro lock. This problem is then made worse because the ECU commands a richer fuel mixture when it sees a cold coolant reading.  So if you are riding a stock snow bike without a thermostat you will end up with an extremely rich air-fuel ratio causing horrible fuel consumption, calibrations tables limiting maximum horsepower, and risk severe engine failure from fuel thinning out the engine oil. 

Finally, the existing aftermarket performance products made by other companies do not do anything to address or solve these issues – they only make them worse. Most aftermarket kits consist of a fuel control box that piggyback off the OEM EUC. These boxes splice in-between the stock ECU and fuel injectors (and maybe the ignition coils if that’s part of the kit) and connect to other stock parts on the bike like the throttle-position sensor. These aftermarket kits don’t really improve performance, they just alter the communication to the ECU so it won’t throw codes as you ride the bike in a way it wasn’t designed for.

While this sounds good in theory, it’s actually the worst thing you can do to your bike. Not only will this type of overhaul void any manufacture warranty on your bike it will also create a whole mess of problems later. Here’s just a few of what you can expect when you purchase an aftermarket kit from one of our competitors: constant manual adjustments, loss of power, increased fuel consumption…. and the risk of destroying your bike.
